Onyxis a form of quartz made up entirely of minute crystals. These crystals are so small that they are only barely visible when a thin cross section of the stone is put under a microscope. Pure black onyx is said to be the most famous type; however, the banded varieties of onyx are much more common in nature. The color of the bands can range from white to almost every other color.

Typically, onyx is used as a gem stone in jewelry, but it can also be manufactured into tiles, vanity tops, table tops, and fireplace surrounds. Because of its crystalline structure, many types of onyx are translucent and can be backlit.
